Motion, or inertial, sensors have recently made a dramatic debut in the consumer electronics (CE) industry, playing pivotal roles in several well-received products. Qualtré Inc. is commercializing the next generation of these inertial sensors, further broadening their applicability in CE devices like cellular handsets, personal navigation devices, and gaming controllers. Using a proprietary high-performance, low-cost technology platform, Qualtré aims to be the leading supplier of inertial sensors for these devices. Employing a fabless semiconductor business model, Qualtré will offer, by early 2009, the QGYR300, the first-ever three-axis single-package gyroscope for CE markets. This product will be followed by the QIMU600, the first full six-degree-of-freedom (6DOF) sensor, with support electronics, in a single surface-mounted plastic package. The Atlanta-based company is a 2007 spin-out from Georgia Tech's Integrated MEMS Lab and was founded by leading researchers in the field. |
